Girls Like Us by Sheila Weller
My stated-not-stated resolution for 2012 was to read more books. Doesn’t matter the type of book, how long it is, etc etc. Just read more doll and watch less mindless television.
So, this was my first book. I picked it up because I realized I know next to nothing about Carly Simon. Which is hilarious because I finished this book not liking her at all. I mean- I expected to read about these strong women and figure out that they weren’t as strong as their songs- but I dunno. Everything about Carly rubbed me the wrong way. Her personality, her voice, and even her damn album covers seemed obnoxious.
I ended up being more sympathetic to Carole King. Amazed by Joni Mitchell’s poetry of lyrics. And re-discovering my teenage love of Laura Nyro. So much so that I have been looking around used record shops for a copy of Eli and the Thirteenth Confession. No such luck yet.
